Most parts in South Goa will be hit by a major power shutdown on May 11, on account of pre-monsoon maintenance works at major substations from 7 am to 3 pm.
The day-long power shutdown is expected to affected several institutions, hospitals and business establishments in South Goa, which have little or no access to alternate power systems.
According to a government media release, the power shut down has been arranged from the Xeldem substation in South Goa on May 11, from 7 am to 3 pm to attend to pre-monsoon maintenance works on the 220 KV, 110 KV and 33 KV lines, the switch yard at Xeldem and also in the associated 33/11 KV substations feeding from the Xeldem substation.
The areas affected by the shutdown are entire Salcete area, Cuncolim, Balli, Benaulim, Velim, Carmona, Nessai, Cancona, Poinguinim, Rivona, Sanguem, Xelpem, Quepem, Assolda, Xeldem, Sanvordem, Shigao, Curchorem, Verna Industrial Estate and the Salaulim water works at Xelpem.
When contacted, Mahadevappa C R, assistant engineer at the Electricity Sub-Div II section at Quepem, said the power shutdown was necessary to carry out pre-monsoon maintenance of breakers and other vital maintenance, to minimise occasional breakdown in power supply during the monsoon.
“Although the maintenance work and the power shutdown will take around 5-6 hours, it is being done so that people will not suffer during the monsoon.”
Mahadevappa advised people to take necessary precautionary measures for the sick and pregnant women and to keep emergency devices charged to tackle any emergency.
