Citing "good detection rate" Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday expressed satisfaction over police functioning and announced that the Goa police will conduct awareness programmes, especially on cybercrime, at school and college campuses soon.

He said, the crime detection rate of the Goa police was fairly high and police functioning was satisfactory especially with the recent initiative launched by the force to hold dialogue with the citizenry and tenant verification.

Sawant, who holds the home portfolio, had held a meeting with top police officials to review the State's crime scenario in the face of a spate of crimes reported across Goa in recent days.

He said, a significant proportion of crimes in Goa were committed by migrants which can be curbed and reduced only with the cooperation of the citizenry.

"In maximum crimes, those who come from outside and stay here are involved. If people co-operate, these crimes can be reduced,” he said after the crime review meeting with the police officials.

The chief minister stressed the need for citizens who let out their premises to come forward and comply with tenant verification procedures and added that over 30,000 tenant verifications had been completed thus far.

The verified tenants had been issued certification, Sawant said, adding that hoteliers and those who provide other type of accommodation to ensure that appropriate documents are taken from their guests.

Sawant said, his government is also considering reforms and changes to State police laws as several old statutes have to be tweaked to make them relevant to times.

Another initiative that Sawant said was likely to be implemented was permitting filing of complaints online.

He said, the e-policing project by which complaints will be registered online, is currently being worked on.
