A man was injured after being attacked by a bear at Kadval along Goa-Karnataka border on Friday evening.
The incident took place at about 4 pm when Shankar Gaonkar had gone to the forest. A bear is believed to have pounced on Gaonkar and attacked him.
Speaking to reporters at the Valpoi CHC, Gaonkar said he was horrified when the bear pounced on him.
“I tried to resist the attack, but sustained injuries on my leg. I raised and alarm and the bear fled into the forest,” said Gaonkar.
A wounded Gaonkar managed to return to his house and family members rushed him to the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC), from where he was later shifted to the GMC hospital at Bambolim.
Locals have claimed that the bear has been sighted in the area since the last eight days and the attack on Friday has caused alarm among locals.
The incident will also be of concern among forest lovers and visitors to the area, as a large number of people visit areas in and around Kadval, especially during weekends.
A number of residents from Kadval visit Valpoi town for their provisions and other supplies.
