Man attacks wife, children in Calangute; boy serious

Police detain accused; enquiries reveal man was under mental stress, referred to IPHB

A man attacked his wife and three minor children in a rented room in Gaurawada-Calangute in the wee hours of Saturday.

The 7-year-old boy is reported to be in critical condition and is undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital at Bambolim, while the wife and two minor children have been discharged from hospital.

The accused, a 30-year-old man from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, has been detained by police in this connection.

In a police complaint, the wife stated that the incident took place at about 2.30 am when her husband, a carpenter by profession, flung a carpentry tool at her, inflicting injuries on her hand.

He then assaulted their 5-year-old and 2-year-old daughters, before hitting their 7-year-old son on the head with a stick.

When the wife and children began screaming for help, the house owner and neighbours rushed to their aid. They rushed the wife and children to the Candolim Primary Health Centre, from where all three children were referred to the GMC hospital at Bambolim. The condition of the boy is reported to be serious.

A Calangute Police team later detained the accused and since he began acting erratically, sent him for a checkup at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) in Bambolim.

Enquiries revealed that the accused had recently purchased a second-hand goods rickshaw a few days ago and since then, he was under mental stress. He had been acting in an erratic manner and would abuse and assault his wife and children at night.

Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Akshak Parsekar under the supervision of Police Inspector Somnath Majik and guidance of Deputy Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Karpe.
