MAPUSA
Blaming the local councillors for the rise in illegal constructions in Mapusa, the Congress on Saturday said the Mapusa Municipal Council has no right to rule as they have miserably failed the people of
the city.
“Illegal constructions have sprouted everywhere in Mapusa. Even fields have not been spared as several constructions have come up in the fields in Gaunsa-vaddo and behind the deputy collector’s office,” said Vijay Bhike, President, North Goa District Congress.
The North Goa District Congress chief was addressing a news conference along with Porvorim Congress Block President, Shankar Phadte and others.
Referring to the recent disclosure by the PWD Executive Engineer of the existence of more than 200 illegal water connections in Mapusa, Bhike said the information clearly shows that the councillors are behind the illegalities.
He said waste was found strewn in every nook and corner of Mapusa indicating that all was not well on the garbage collection front.
Questioning the recent penchant of the Mapusa council for consultants, Bhike wondered if the engineers in the municipality were incapable of doing their jobs.
“For every little job, the council has decided to appoint consultants. What are the municipal engineers doing? Are they not fit for their job?” Bhike said and alleged whether appointing consultants was another route to fill the pockets of the councillors.
Porvorim Block President, Shankar Phadte, said the failure of the civic body in stopping illegal constructions indicate that the Mapusa Municipal Council was inactive and incapable.
He said with garbage stacked all around the sanitary condition in the market was so bad that tourists were not in mood to visit the city again.
“If MMC cannot take action on illegal constructions and maintain cleanliness in the city then the city-fathers have no right to run the council,” Phadte said.
He said the people of Mapusa were suffering because of the ineffectiveness of the council.
Bhike also slammed the new 2022 deadline fixed by Waste Management Minister to make Goa garbage-free.
“Before trying to make Goa garbage-free, Michael Lobo should make his constituency drugs free,” he said.
He said the number of illegal works has increased in the coastal village of Calangute after the BJP MLA was elected in the constituency.
