The Nationalist Congress Party General Secretary Sanjay Barde on Tuesday said the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has only managed to pass resolutions in the last five years but failed to carry out any development works worth its salt in Mapusa.
He also alleged that a councillor demanded money to pass a resolution for transfer of shops.
“The government has spent almost Rs 80 crore to lay the sewerage line and complete the sewerage treatment plant in Mapusa but is yet to give connections to individual houses. The roads are in bad condition. Major projects like the bus-stand and Ravindra Bhavan have failed to see the light of the day,” Barde said.
The NCP General Secretary presented a memorandum to MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza and Chief Officer Kabir Shirgaonkar.
Continuing, Barde said the Mapusa councillors have been fooling the people of Mapusa by only passing various resolutions but failed to implement any of those resolutions.
“We have evidence of a councillor, who is on record demanding money to pass a resolution in the council meeting for a transfer of shops. The chief officer should investigate and take strict action against such councillors,” he said.
The NCP General Secretary further said the government had passed a law to regularise houses in private land and yet just before elections, the Mapusa civic body issues notices to illegal houses to instil fear in peoples mind.
“The notices are only a ploy to force people to vote for the ruling councillors during the civic election, which is due anytime soon,” he said.
“This is a corrupt council. This is happening in Mapusa because there are no councillors in the opposition who can take up people’s issues,” Barde said.
He said the NCP will write to the Director of Municipal Administration to declare the reservation of wards at the earliest once the civic election is announced.
