Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chaiperson Ryan Braganza on Saturday said the council would not come under pressure from any quarter and there was no question of removing the market inspector who was doing a good job.
“The council is unanimous that discipline should be restored in the fish market and it will be achieved at any cost by following laid out procedures without harming anyone’s interests,” Braganza said.
On Friday, the fish vendors marched to the municipal council and while discussing issues with Chief Officer Clen Madeira, had demanded the removal of the “rude” market inspector.
The chief officer informed the delegation of vendors led by Shashikala Govekar that the civic body would not lower its guard in restoring order in the market and that, they would have to follow the rules. He also said that the demand for removal of market inspector would be put before the council.
As per rules, fish vendors have to sit with their baskets on the raised platform so that consumers can move around freely in the passages. But many vendors were found squatting with their baskets in the passages, thereby obstructing the movement of public.
The chairperson said the civic body would continue with its task of restoring order and discipline in every section of the market, including the fish market, which belongs to the municipal council.
“We have noticed some vendors were setting the rules in the fish market. Since no one questioned them, they think they can do whatever they want. We are very firm in restoring discipline in the market and all those baskets of fish vendors who sit on the passages will be seized,” the chairperson said.
He said there was no merit in the demand of the fish vendors for the removal of the market inspector.
“The market inspector is doing a fantastic job and the council will back her to the hilt,” Braganza said.
