When many civic bodies in the State have taken up pre-monsoon works just around a week back, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has finished first round of de-silting works in all 20 wards in its jurisdiction.
Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Sandeep Falari had kickstarted de-silting work of major nullahs and drains on March 1, in an effort to control flooding in the town this monsoon. The work came to an end on April 17.
“We have completed almost 70 percent de-silting of drains and nullahs in all the wards and the work has been quite satisfactory,” said Fallari.
In its second round of pre-monsoon works, the chairperson has now drawn up a plan to clean up the remaining areas where some works were pending or were incomplete.
The second round has already started from April 19 and will end on May 12, giving another two weeks’ time to the council for a final touch up before it starts to pour.
“In the second round, we have given minimum two days to maximum 10 days to each ward, depending on the amount of work left,” the chairperson said.
He said ward 10 has been allotted maximum number of days (10 days) in Round 2, as major nullahs are situated in this ward.
The modus operandi will remain the same as was in the first round, with 10 to 12 labourers working in a group to clean the drains and the nullahs. Sundays have been reserved to clean the drains in the main market area.
“What is important is that MMC has got a head-start in the clean-up drive before the monsoon,” the chairperson said.
It may be recalled the chairperson in the first round had drawn up a date-wise schedule to focus on all the wards in Mapusa, giving five days for each ward while reserving Sundays for the market area.
As per the schedule on a given day almost 40 labourers were engaged in pre-monsoon works, which went about almost for one and half month until it ended on April 17.
