The muck during the rains only adds to the misery of the people who come to shop.” rAddressing a news conference, he said the Mapusa Congress Block will present a memorandum to the deputy collector highlighting the pathetic condition of the Mapusa market and the inter-state bus-stand on Monday (July 10). rSpeaking further, he said open gutters, waste strewn all around, vendors squatting anywhere and everywhere, two-wheelers zooming inside the market, haphazard parking, etc, clearly indicated that Mapusa Municipal Council has lost its grip on the affairs of the market. rQuestioning the market committee’s role in putting systems in place, the Mapusa Congress Block chief wondered what efforts the market committee was taking to alleviate the day-to-day problems of the people visiting the market. Slamming the city councillors for their lack of interest to work for the betterment of Mapusa, youth Congress leader Sudhin Naik said the councillors were more interested in self-development. r“This MMC is the most corrupt and lethargic council which is least concerned about the problems faced by people in Mapusa,” he alleged and wondered if they would at all wake up from their slumber. He said everywhere in Mapusa one can only see garbage, open gutters and roads full of potholes and further added that Mapusa was in immediate danger of epidemic outbreak. r“The civic amenities have gone for a toss even as the councillors go on taking resolutions but these resolutions only remain on paper,” rNaik said. rrrrFDA takes note of the market mess rrMAPUSA:Taking cognizance of the open drains and unhygienic condition in Mapusa market, the department of Food and Drug Administration has decided to write to Mapusa Municipal Council to initiate steps to maintain cleanliness in the market. r“We have noticed that some drains have been left open in Mapusa sub-yard and the debris kept by the side of the drain has not been lifted from the area. I will prepare a report on the unhygienic condition and send it to the director. We will then write to the MMC,” said Rajiv Korde, senior FDA inspector. rThe senior FDA inspector noticed the sorry state of affairs in the market when he along with his team swooped down on some unscrupulous vendors on Friday. Korde said the stink originating from the debris and the open drains inconveniences the vendors carrying business in the area. rHe said the civic body will have to first clear the debris and close the drains to restore proper sanitary condition in the market. r“MMC will have to either close the drains and clear the debris or shift the vendors to some other area that is clean and hygienic,” Korde said. rOn many occasions, the Mapusa Urban Health Centre has also written to the civic body whenever there were conditions that were hazardous to health in the market and in the city. r“Many times the public bring to our attention the hazardous conditions. On several occasions we have written to MMC whenever condition of health hazard cropped up,” said Dr Anant Palekar, Health Officer, Mapusa Urban Health Centre.
