Amid the strike of the workers outside, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday decided to extend the term of the private contractor engaged to collect door-to-door waste from 10 wards for another two months.
The Mapusa council had outsourced the door-to-door waste collection in wards 1 to 10 to a private contractor around a year ago.
“We are happy with the performance of the contractor. However, we did not get time to complete the formalities of re-tendering the waste collection contract and therefore decided to extend the term of the contractor by another two months. Within these two months, we shall complete all the pending formalities to re-tender the contract,” said Shubhanghi Vaigankar, Chairperson of Mapusa council during a discussion at a special council meeting.
The door-to-door waste collection was outsourced to a private contractor on August 17, 2021, which ended on August 27, 2022. Last month, the council extended the contract by one and half a months until October 12.
Former chairperson and senior councillor Sudhir Kandolkar enquired whether the waste collection was happening properly and if the waste was segregated at the source.
Several councillors from wards 1 to 10 said that they were happy with the waste collection carried out by the private contractor. They also said that they have not received complaints from anyone in their ward.
“There are black spots everywhere where people from other areas dump garbage. We cannot blame the contractor for the waste accumulated at the black spots,” said Shashank Narvekar, councillor of ward 5.
The chairperson also informed that the council has recently procured around 100 new garbage bins.
