MARGAO
It was 12 past midnight. When most Madgavkars had already gone to bed, anxiety rent the air amongst ardent supporters that descended in the narrow lane leading to Malbhat “ the area playing host to the apartment of former Chief Minister and Margao MLA Digambar
Kamat.
The reason was not far too see. “Baba” was celebrating his 64th birthday on International Women’s Day and his supporters and close aides came from all corners of the city not only to shower their love and affection, but to make a fervent plea to Digambar to play his due and assertive role in politics in the interest of Goa.
And, the six-time Margao MLA did not let his supporters down. As the deafening fireworks lit the otherwise dark sky, ‘Baba’ virtually agreed to the request of his supporters. Amidst loud cheers from his aides, the former Chief Minister thundered at the dead of night, promising that they would see Digambar in an “aggressive” political mode in the future. For a moment, his supporters were trying to figure out what actually their Baba meant. His statement, however, assumes significance as he made it in the context of a poem recited by his former Personal Security Officer, making a plea to the Margao MLA to take over the political reigns again in the interest of Goemkars. “You have all come here to shower your love and affection. Your love gives met the strength. And, I derive my strength from my workers. I promise you that Digambar will not remain the same. In future, you will see an aggressive Digambar’, the Margao MLA amidst cheers from the supporters.
Digambar did not stop there. He surprised many a supporters when he gave a call at the dead of night to his supporters to brace up for a mid-term election in the state. “Elections are not declared so far. But, I take this opportunity to warn you that taking into account the political situation in the country, I will not be surprised if there is an election in Goa along with the Lok Sabha polls in 2019”, he said, while urging his foot soldiers to brace for the electoral battle.
Expressing his gratitude to his workers, Digambar reminded that he would not have been re-elected again and again without their love and support. “I do not want to thank you simply because I want to remain in your debt forever’, he added.
Reiterating his resolve and commitment to serve the common man, the Margao MLA warned that no injustice on the common man or his workers will be tolerated by him. Without making any reference, he said “they should remember that no injustices to the common man will be tolerated. We have fought for the common man and their rights. And, we are here to give the common man justice”.
Digambar cut the birthday cake in the presence of wife Asha, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
In fact, he had to cut three birthday cakes prepared by his supporters.
