Around two tonnes of Covid medical waste which was secured at the Sonsodo landfill site by the Margao Municipal Council was finally transported by the government-appointed agency.
Margao Municipal sanitary inspector Viraj Arabekar informed that the civic body had secured the Covid biomedical waste at the Sonsodo landfill site to ensure that the waste is kept away from the routine waste. “In the absence of the government-appointed agency regularly lifting the bio-medical waste collected by the MMC workers from the homes of Covid patients, the waste was secured in the landfill site away from the normal waste,” he said.
Arabekar added: “The MMC had put a system in place, where our teams in PPE kits used to collect the bio-medical waste from the homes of the Covid patients after disinfecting the waste with sodium hypochlorite disinfectant. When we were told that the government agency would collect the waste, the civic body took the decision to secure the waste in the landfill site, to ensure it does not get mixed with other waste or pose risk to humans.”
It took more than a day for the Margao civic body workers to lift the bio-medical waste stacked in yellow coloured bags from the landfill site, before the agency sent a van to collect the waste on Saturday.
