MARGAO
With the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) sending clear directions to the Margao Municipal Council to deposit the compensation amount of Rs one crore with the board within 15 days,
MMC Chairperson Pooja Naik has called for an emergency meeting of the Council on Monday to decide on the course of action.
The Chairperson had a word with Margao municipal retainer Adv Maria Mesquita on the matter on Friday.
She was apparently trying to figure out from Adv Mesquita whether the civic body has filed any appeal or revision in the matter before any authority given that the GPSCB had first issued directions to pay the amount in August last.
Questions have been raised by the city fathers why the municipal administration did not take the necessary steps to defend the case of the council, which resulted in GSPCB reminding the council again to deposit the Rs one crore
City fathers told the Chairperson that the issue of depositing the compensation amount with the GSPCB was discussed at a meeting of the council headed by then Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai. In fact, a councillor recalled that the council meeting had given the nod to the administration to take whatever action deemed fit in the interest of the council in the compensation payment issue.
“Let the administration and the municipal advocate explain to the council on the issue at the special meeting scheduled on Monday,” remarked a councillor.
