The Margao Municipal Council will meet on Friday to prepare a road map to tackle the burning garbage issue as the Civic body has decided to discuss a series of measures, including implementing bulk waste generators for the housing societies and giving the nod for decentralization of waste treatment by setting up bio-methane plants.

Days after the Director of Municipal Administration Dr Tariq Thomas urged the Civic body to incentivize bulk waste generators, including housing societies having more than 40 dwelling units, a special council meeting scheduled on Friday noon will discuss the entire gamut of garbage related issues.

While the MMC is bracing to tender the bio-methane plant to be set up at the SGDPA market, the civic body has plans to set up 2-3 more such plants in the city as part of the plan to decentralize waste treatment.

Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar told The Goan that the council will put a road map in place to tackle the burning garbage issue through a series of measures.

“If the civic body implements the scheme for bulk waste generators with incentives, it will give huge relief in the collection of wet waste from the housing societies”, he said, adding that the Council meeting will discuss how to go about incentivizing the housing societies in lieu of wet waste treatment.

Saying that the Civic body will go for decentralization of the waste in the city, Panchwadkar said while the Civic body has given its nod for a bio-methane plant, the Council will explore the possibility of setting up 2-3 such plants across the city. “If 20% of the wet waste is treated in the city itself via these bio-methane plants, the amount of wet waste going to Sonsodo will be reduced greatly,” he said.

In this respect, the Chief Officer said the SGPDA, which is a bulk waste generator will have to cooperate with the civic body by making available land to set up the bio-methane plant in the market.

The Chief Officer also disclosed plans to set up additional dry waste baling machines in the city to ensure that dry waste does not at all go to Sonsodo by March-end. “People are apprehensive that the baling machines in their backyards will create nuisance. But, those who harbor such apprehensions should visit the old fish market where they can see for themselves the working of the baling machines,” he added.

Will MMC succeed in persuading waste contractor to extend his work?

MARGAO: With just a day to go for the expiry of the door-to-door waste collection contractor’s deadline to quit the job from February 1, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar on Thursday said he would discuss the situation with Chairperson Pooja Naik before evolving a solution.

With the Civic body yet to tender the work of door to door collection for the 11 Municipal wards falling in Fatorda area of the city, sources in the know informed that the civic body is banking on the municipal chairperson to persuade the contractor to extend his work by a fortnight or month to enable the municipality to float the tender.

Given that the contractor was engaged for door-to-door collection in the 11 municipal wards of Fatorda, municipal officials are pinning hopes on the chairperson to ensure that the contractor continues his services by at least a fortnight and save the day for the civic body.
