MARGAO
Town and Country Planning Minister VIjai Sardesai’s Janata Darbar at the Margao Municipal Council last year has not helped the MMC accounts section as the Director of Municipal Administration has still not completely relieving the lone accountant till date.
It’s now a year since the lone municipal accountant was asked to report to the Director of Municipal Administration’s office for an initial period of three months. However, the accountant was not relieved as was expected by the municipal body, with the DMA’s office seeking a three-month extension for the accountant to work in its Panjim office.
The TCP Minister’s visit to the municipal body around October last year to hold the Janata Darbar and resolve issues plaguing Madgavkars has not borne fruit as the A class municipal body is yet to get the services of a full-fledged accountant till date.
As things stand today, the Margao municipal accountant has been officially relieved by the DMA’s office around a fortnight ago, but on a condition that she has to report to the DMA’s office for two days a week. The accountant’s absence for two days has thrown the MMC accountant office haywire as she is mandated to report to the DMA’s office every Tuesday and Thursday to help and assist matters in the DMA office.
Sources in the civic body informed that work is piling up in the MMC accounts section with the accountant asked to shuttle between the Margao civic body and the DMA office. Questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body why the DMA’s office has not requisitioned the services of the CCP accountant, who is based in Panjim, instead of making the accountant from the Margao civic body to shuttle between the two towns every week.
When The Goan had a week ago asked Director of Municipal Administration, Maneka, to shed light on the accountant’s post in the Margao Municipal Council, she insisted that the accountant has already been relieved, but has been asked to report to the office for two days in the DMA office just to help put accountancy issues in order in her office. “The accountant from the Margao municipality basically takes care of accounts issues relating to South Goa. No sooner these issues are put in place, the MMC accountant can go back to Margao,” she added.
MMC Babita Angle Prabhudesai told The Goan that the absence of a full-fledged accountant has come in the way of the smooth functioning of the MMC accounts section. “We have had the problem with the accounts section for a year now after the then DMA had requisitioned the services of our accountant,” she said, adding that the municipality will take up with the issue with the government.
