Saligao gram sabha held on Sunday witnessed discussions on the foul smell emanating from the garbage treatment plant, garbage tax for rented premises, scrapyards, hot-mixing of roads and frequent disruption of power supply.
Mario Cordeiro mentioned that the foul smell emanating from the garbage treatment plant on Saligao plateau is unbearable and has made the lives of the residents residing around the said plant very miserable.
He said as per the information received by him, the plant is not functioning properly which is why the foul smell is generated. The panchayat should take up this issue with the authorities concerned and resolve the problem, failing which the residents will be forced to launch an agitation, Cordeiro warned.
In regard to a question raised by Cordeiro relating to a scrapyard, the sarpanch Lafira Gomes replied that the panchayat has sent notices to all the scrapyards operating in Saligao and had advised them to furnish the written permission if obtained by them from the authorities concerned failing which they will have to close down their operations .
Some villagers requested the panchayat to change its decision to charge garbage tax of Rs 1000 per year towards rented premises and instead charge them Rs 100 only and regularise their rooms by issuing house numbers.
The sarpanch mentioned that the panchayat has undertaken the work of survey of rented premises in the village and once it is completed the decision of levying garbage tax will be taken up. Secondly, panchayat does not issue house numbers to the structures built illegally, clarified Gomes. In regard to hot-mixing of roads, Gomes mentioned that the panchayat has
already taken up the matter with the Public Works Department and the latter has assured the panchayat that the work of the hot-mixing will be begin soon.
The issues of frequent disruption in power supply and cattle entering fields were also discussed at the gram sabha.
Earlier the sarpanch welcomed the villagers and the panchayat secretary Karishma Ghadi read out the minutes of the last gram sabha meeting.
