Both washed away by strong undercurrents

The bodies of Ashlesha Naik, councillor from Ward 21 in Margao, and Mohammed Sheikh (17) of Curchorem were washed away from the spot and later recovered at Sonarbhag-Usgao.
According to police reports, Naik and Sheikh along with their respective groups were on separate picnics near the Khandepar river. Both the groups had ventured into the river, when Sheikh began to struggle in the water.
His family members raised an alarm and hearing their cries for help, Naik “ who was also in the river nearby “ did not think twice and rushed to his aid, but lost her life in an attempt to rescue the teenager. Strong undercurrents washed them away from the picnic spot and their bodies were later found at Sonarbhag-Usgao.
Police further informed that the incident occurred in the afternoon and the bodies were retrieved shortly after.
“We got a call from Sub District Hospital informing that two bodies were brought to the hospital,” the hawaldar on duty told The Goan.
According to locals, many people visit the spot on Saturdays and Sundays for picnics. On Sunday morning, there were many groups along the Khandepar river to beat the summer heat.
Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle, who rushed to Ponda Sub District Hospital, told media persons that it was a tragic incident.
“She was a very good swimmer, but still drowned trying to save the life of a youth. It is really very sad news for all of us, as she was very kind and a loving person,” Angle said.
