Why is the Public Works Department (PWD) or the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) dilly dallying in throwing open the tarred lot for vehicular parking opposite the KTC bus stand, Margao? Or, is it that the two agencies are waiting for formal inauguration to throw open the gates of the parking lot?
These questions are being asked by the two-wheeler riders, who have been denied parking facility despite the fact that two-wheeler riders are parking their vehicles alongside the roads in the vicinity. The delay in inaugurating the parking lot assumed significance given that the newly-elected ward councillor Clara Fernandes along with local residents of Madel had hit the streets soon after the municipal poll to demand early completion of the parking lot.
When The Goan contacted PWD engineer Amstrong to shed light on the parking lot, he said the PWD has completed work on the project costing Rs 14 lakh, while reminding that the land in question, developed by the PWD, belongs to the MMC.
The PWD had taken up the two parking lots opposite the Margao KTC bus stand around two years ago, taking into account the hardships faced by the two-wheeler riders as well as the residents of Madel, who had been complaining about the obstruction to their movement to the residential locality by two-wheeler parking along the road side.
A visit to the parking lot revealed that though the area has been tarred, it is still not open for vehicular parking. To prevent vehicles from entering the lot, stones have been dumped at the entrance, forcing the two-wheeler riders to park their vehicles along the road side.
