The breakdown of a 150-mm diameter old pipeline near the Ravindra Bhavan in the wee hours of Wednesday has once again raised suspicions among senior PWD officials whether the valves are tampered with in the night to increase the pressure resulting in the breakdown of the pipeline.

The breakdown of a 150-mm diameter old pipeline near the Ravindra Bhavan in the wee hours of Wednesday has once again raised suspicions among senior PWD officials whether the valves are tampered with in the night to increase the pressure resulting in the breakdown of the pipeline.
The over three-decade old water pipeline near the Ravindra Bhavan broke down at around 3 am on Wednesday, resulting in disruption of water shortage to the Borda locality. Till late Wednesday evening, PWD workers were on the job to
replace the damaged pipeline and resume supply of water to the residents.
Senior officials, however, have raised questions whether the valves are being tampered with by the miscreants in order to raise the water pressure in the pipeline given that some of the areas in the city
experience low water pressure, especially in the
evenings.
When The Goan contacted PWD Executive Engineer, Sanjay Waivekar, to shed light on the breakdown of the pipeline, he said he suspected mischief in the breakdowns of water pipeline in the city. "Last time around, we came across breakdown of a pipeline in the Aquem area, causing water shortage to the Malbhat area of the city. Suspecting mischief, a PWD junior engineer lodged his complaint to the police suspecting tampering of the pressure valve by unknown miscreants," he said, while not ruling out the possibility of miscreants tampering the valve near the Ravindra Bhavan.
"When the miscreants tamper with the valve, certain areas do receive increased water pressure, but one has to bear in mind that that it also posed danger to the old pipeline, some of them being as old as 30-40 years," he said.
In the instant case, the Fatorda police, which were on a routine round of the area last night, spotted the pipeline breakdown, before intimating the incident to the PWD officials, as water gushing out from the damaged pipeline threatened to wash away
the road.
