As the Salpem lake farmers embarked on a grand plan on Thursday to double the area under paddy cultivation this ensuing season, sewage water from neighbouring Margao continues to flow unabated despite High Court directions to the agencies to plug the sewage.
As tractors went about the work of ploughing operation, the adjoining storm water nullah was found de-silted and rid of the plastic and other waste. Sewage and waste water however flowed unabated from Margao into the storm water nullah, raising questions over the responsibility of the Margao Municipal Council and the PWD, sewerage to stop the flow.
What’s interesting to note is that while there’s no letup in the sewage discharge into the storm water nullah, the agencies seemed involved in passing the buck on each other. The MMC has sought to wash their hands off by saying that it is now the responsibility of the PWD, Sewerage to get the 287 households and commercial establishments connected to the sewage line by obtaining connections or disconnect the water supply.
The PWD, Sewerage, sources pointed out is groping in the dark over the action to be taken against the violators. The end result being that there’s no letup in the flow of sewage and waste waters into the storm water nullahs, which later finds its way into the Salpem lake and other water bodies.
