The Chor Bazaar on the Margao station road is in the news again, even as questions are being raised whether the activity is being carried out right under the ‘watchful eyes” of the men in khaki attached to the Margao police station.
Otherwise, consider this. At around 5 am, hawkers and vendors, including a couple of individuals were seen on the station road to sell second-hand goods, including cell phones.
There was, however, no sign of any police personnel around to drive away the vendors and hawkers, even though they consider the market as illegal and openly admit that in the past it offered a platform for sale of stolen property.
When The Goan called up Margao police station in-charge PI Kapil Nayak said, “Policemen are drafted for the job of driving away the hawkers at the Chor Bazaar. They must have cracked a whip against the illegal activity.”
However, the ground reality is different. The police were conspicuous by their absence at the station road area, right from 5.30 am to at least till 6 am when the vendors carried out brisk business.
It could not be ascertained whether the men in uniform descended on the station road area only after dawn.
While second hand as well as new mixers were prominently offered for sale in the market, a couple of individuals were offering second hand cell phones to prospective buyers.
Incidentally, the Chor Bazaar was earlier seen on the Sambari-Bata showroom stretch of the station road, but the activity now stands shifted to the area near the old Margao railway station, close to the footbridge.
The market offering second hand goods and items had acquired notoriety as the Chor Bazaar after stolen properties from the across the State found its way to Margao.
The police had managed to recover stolen properties from the Bazaar in the past.
