Massive turnout in Salcete lights up Congress camp

the goan I network

MARGAO

The Congress camp was upbeat in South Goa with minority heartland Salcete recording huge polling -- around 1.63 lakh votes to be precise -- leaving the ruling BJP and other players in an introspection mode.

Of the 4.22 lakh votes cast in the 20 Assembly segments of South Goa, 1.63 lakh votes have been polled in the eight Assembly segments of Nuvem, Curtorim, Fatorda, Margao, Benaulim, Cuncolim, Navelim and Velim. The balance 2.58 lakh vote is spread in the remaining 12 Assembly segments in the eight hinterland areas and four segments of Mormugao taluka.

Barring Fatorda, where the BJP is expected to improve on its 2014 performance, BJP’s presence in the remaining minority stronghold is on a strong footing, apart from Margao and the ruling party leaders will have to only hope that the Aam Admi party succeeds in putting a halt to the Congress’ free run in Salcete.

Congress’ strategy to go for a repeat of the 2017 Assembly election result in Salcete seemed to have

paid off, as the huge polling is expected to keep party candidate Francisco Sardinha in good stead,

further exuding confidence that the Dhavalikar factor will dent the BJP in Ponda and Sanguem talukas which together accounts five Assembly segments of Madkaim, Ponda, Shiroda, Sanguem and Sanvordem.
