Stating that police personnel and home department are very important and that they need a decent living, Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said PWD will carry out Non Destructive Test (NDT) to determine structural strength of the buildings and to ascertain if buildings could be restored after repairs or required to be demolished.
He was speaking after conducting a joint inspection along with PWD and police officials of the police quarters at Chicalim on Friday. Chicalim Sarpanch Seby Pereira, Deputy Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav, Ward Councillor Yuvraj Volvoikar, PWD assistant engineer A D Nagarchi, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo and DySP Mormugao Lawrence D'Souza were present.
Godinho said the buildings that were built 40 years ago are in dilapidated condition and unfit. "There was sewage flowing from the chambers as regular maintenance was not done in the police quarters."
"I have informed the PWD engineer to get the NDT reports as early as possible and once the reports come, estimates will be prepared," said Godinho and added that he would follow up the matter on day-to-day basis.
"I will also speak to the chief minister and the PWD minister so that this project gets priority," he added.
"The police personnel and the home department are very important and they need a decent living and not a threat to life where building may crash while they are sleeping. PWD has said that NDT reports will come within 15 days and we will take immediate action," said Godinho.
Assistant Engineer, PWD, Works Division VIII, A D Nagarchi, said department had already submitted estimates for custom repairs and works like plaster, tiling and restoration of cracks. "We will begin these works soon," said Nagarchi.
When asked why regular maintenance was not taken up in the past, he said though estimates were prepared, there was problem of funds in the police department.
