Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho has opposed the plea of Aires Rodrigues seeking to team up with the prosecution in the trial of the multi-crore rupee power subsidy scam case against him before the North Goa District and Sessions Court.
The trial and its reportage could potentially be a source of deep embarrassment for the government of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who incidentally was the original complainant against Godinho.
In a written submission made to the court by Godinho’s lawyer Arun Bras de Sa, it was argued that Rodrigues has personal animosity against Godinho and should therefore not be allowed to assist the prosecution.
On Thursday, Judge Irshad Aga heard the arguments of Rodrigues who is citing the current changed political equation between Godinho and Parrikar, who was the original complainant in the case, to seek the court’s nod to assist the prosecution.
Since Godinho is now a powerful minister in the Cabinet headed by Parrikar, the possibility of the case being derailed is high, Rodrigues argued.
Judge Aga then adjourned the case for July 13 when he will continue to hear arguments on Rodrigues’ plea before passing orders either allowing or denying him permission to join the prosecution.
