Measures taken up in port town amid dengue surge

VASCO

Amid rising dengue cases in Vasco and surrounding areas, efforts are being made to tackle potential mosquito breeding sites in the port town.

Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Councillor Shami Salkar said she and her husband and former MPDA chairperson Krishna (Daji) Salkar along with health officials visited potential breeding grounds for dengue and malaria on Thursday and took measures to contain the spread of vector-borne diseases.

Daji Salkar said they have been regularly fumigating different parts of the city.

"We have requested MMC and health officials to step up measures to stop the spread of dengue and other vector-borne diseases,” he said.

Elsewhere, the Revolutionary Goans fumigated areas surrounding Lord Damodar Temple ahead of the Saptah festival.

Revolutionary Goan Member Gaurish Borkar of Dabolim said members had decided to contribute to the iconic Saptah festival in a different way through sanitisation and fumigation.

"We had met the temple committee and explained to them about our plans. We were then invited by the committee to sanitise the premises,” said Borkar.

Saptah Committee President Jagdish Durbhatkar thanked the Revolutionary Goans for having sanitised the temple and carried out the fumigation of the area around the temple.

"We are happy that the group has taken this initiative and this is a remarkable way to contribute to any festival. The members have not only sanitised the temple premises but also carried out a cleanliness drive around the temple, including spraying of medicines in the gutters," said Durbhatkar.
