Sao Jose de Areal witnessed an uproar over the dumping of medical waste along side the road near the Panchayat ghar on Monday.
What made matters worse for the Panchayat body led by Sarpanch Perris D'Costa was the refusal by the Maina Curtorim police to investigate the matter and the stand adopted by the health authorities that they have nothing to issue concerning medical waste disposal. Left with no option with both the police and the health authorities engaged in a blame game, Sarpanch Perris along with Zilla Panchayat member Moreno Rebello descended at the Maina Curtorim police station on Monday evening to lodge a complaint.
"When we called the Maina Curtorim police to come to Areal and investigate the medical waste dumping, the PSI refused saying that the issue does not fall in the police domain", Perris said, pointing out that it is the responsibility of the police to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
"This is a serious offense, but the police say they have nothing to do. When we contacted the health authorities, the concerned persons claimed the matter falls in the police domain", the sarpanch adding that the medical waste comprised of needles, syringes, blood platelets packets etc.
ZP member Moreno Rebello said a packet with a warning "infectious waste" was also found in one of the bags dumped near the Panchayat ghar. "We are not interested in the blame game, but we want the authorities to find out who's responsible behind the waste dumping", Moreno demanded.
It was only late Monday evening that a Maina Curtorim police team visited the spot to take possession of the medical waste. The Sarpanch, however, demanded that the police register a FIR and bring the culprits to book.
