MARGAO
The issue of mega housing projects took the centre stage at the gram sabha of Varca panchayat on Sunday with members raising fears that uncontrolled mega projects will come as a strain on the village infrastructure such as water and power and affect the village demography.
The meeting chaired by sarpanch Salesiana Fernandes also constituted various committees, including the village development committee.
The villagers have called for capping the number of housing units in the village to protect the demography.
The members recalled how the villagers of Carmona had stopped the Raheja project around a decade ago, pointing out that the villages should join hands to foil mega housing projects from taking shape.
The sarpanch, when contacted, told the media that the panchayat has to date not received any complaint concerning any mega housing projects. While saying there’s no clear definition of the meaning of mega housing projects, she pointed out that the promoters get their projects approved by the Town and Country Planning department before they are placed at the panchayats.
