Availing of proper toilets facilities had been a challenge for residents in some areas of Mestawada and Belabai in Vasco.
With no sewage connections and no scope to lay soak pits due to many wells in the area, having toilets had been a major issue in many houses and many residents had to depend on community or public toilets.
To make matters worse, 3 public toilet blocks were old and in a dilapidated condition, rendering them practically useless for about 10 years.
However on Thursday, residents at Mestawada and Belabai rejoiced after Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) finally paid heed to a long-pending demand and launched the work to construct three toilet blocks in the area.
MMC Chief Kritesh Gaonkar launched the work to construct 2 public toilets at Belabai and a new public toilet at Mestawada in the presence of Ward Councillor Rochana Borkar, MMC Councillors and residents.
Gaonkar also assured to take up development works worth Rs 1 crore in the ward.
Speaking on the occasion, MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the proposal has been put up in 2016 by Rochana Borkar but was never processed since she was in opposition.
“After this ruling panel came to power, the works were processed within 2 months. Three 7-seater toilet blocks are to be taken up in the ward at an estimated cost of Rs 16 lakh. 3 existing toilets built 35 years ago were in a dilapidated state and out of use for the last 10 years,” said Gaonkar.
Ward Councillor Rochana Borkar said she had proposed two toilet blocks for reconstruction and one toilet block for renovation.
“There is no sewage connection in the area and acting on my appeal, local MLA and Urban Development Minister Milind Naik agreed to take up these works in the area on priority.”
Ward Councillor Daji Salkar said the present Council is development oriented and has been taking up important works on priority and preference.
