In a proactive move to protect consumers from deceptive trade practices, the Department of Metrology, Vasco, held a critical awareness session for councillors and staff of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
The session, part of the Seva Pakhwada initiative, aimed to arm local representatives with the knowledge needed to safeguard the rights of citizens and ensure fair transactions across the city.
Led by Inspectors Bhupendra Desai and Liladhar Kumbharjuvekar, the session provided a detailed breakdown of the Legal Metrology Acts & Rules in force.
The presentation went beyond a simple overview, offering practical advice on how to spot and prevent common frauds.
Attendees were educated on the importance of verifying the verification and stamping process on weighing scales and measuring instruments, a crucial step to guarantee accuracy.
Specific attention was paid to everyday scenarios where consumers are most vulnerable. Inspectors detailed what to look for at petrol pumps, such as ensuring the dispenser's reading is reset to zero before fuelling.
They also explained the proper method for verifying the accurate weight of gas cylinders and highlighted the essential mandatory declarations required on all pre-packaged goods, including the net quantity and price.
The session was attended by MMC Chairperson Girish Borkar and Councillors Leo Rodrigues, Shradha Mahale, Damodar Kaskar, Prajay Mayekar, and Narayan Borker, along with the MMC staff.
The knowledge gained will enable these local leaders to better address and escalate consumer complaints, strengthening the overall framework of consumer protection in the region.
