Opposition legislators on Thursday raised the issue of rising crime and 'goondaraj' in Goa citing the brutal daylight assault on social activist Rama Kankonkar during the special session for the Speaker's election even demanding, unsuccessfully though, a half-an-hour discussion on it.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao made an oblique reference to the Kankonkar assault issue while congratulating Ganesh Gaonkar on being elected the speaker.
Alemao cited the fact that Gaoinkar is a tribal leader just as Kankonkar is and should raise his voice for justice for him.
AAP's Cruz Silva while congratulating Gaonkar urged him to permit a half-an-hour discussion on the law-and-order issue including the brutal assault of Kankonkar.
Silva was backed by his party colleague Venzy Viegas who also demanded that the House should discuss the issues linked to law-and-order in the wake of the public unrest across the State over the incident of assault on Kankonkar.
RGP MLA Viresh Borkar too made reference to the incident and advised Gaonkar that as Speaker he had a role to play his part whenever such issues linked to the State's interest and public safety and welfare crop up.
