Another massive drive was carried out by the Department of Legal Metrology, Salcete with respect to use of weights and measures including weighing instrument and measuring instruments and also packaged commodities under the provision of Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
A surprise visit was carried out by the Margao Legal Metrology Department under the supervision of Nitin P Purushan, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology, South Zone-I, Margao.
Around four more cases were booked in Aquem, Margao including two packaged commodities and two enforcement cases. “Around 109 packages of LED Surface Panel were seized for not bearing month and year of manufacture and in some cases, month and year of import and also not bearing the customer care address of the person or the office who can be contacted in case of consumer complaint,” the officials said.
The officials further pointed out that 20 packages of LED Surface Panel were seized for not bearing any mandatory declaration which violates Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Two electronic weighing instruments of one ton were seized from Steel and Tubes dealer for using an unverified weighing instrument which was kept for use for the retail sale of tubes and channels which violates the Legal Metrology Act 2009, read with Goa Legal Metrology Rules, 2011.
Strict Compliance with the provision of the Legal Metrology Act and Rules is being informed to the traders failing which necessary action as per law shall be taken.
As the surprise drive will be carried out by the Department of Legal Metrology throughout Goa, the officials have asked all the supermarkets and megamarkets and distributors to take note of the same.
The consumers have also been informed that before buying any commodities with weighing instrument, they should first examine whether the weighing instrument is verified or not and also see the verification certificate issued by the Department of Legal Metrology is exhibited in Trading and Business Premises.
