MARGAO
Curtorim Independent MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Monday dashed off a letter to the Chairman of the House Committee on Mhadei, Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar to immediately call for a meeting of the House Committee on Mhadei.
The MLA has called for the meeting against the backdrop of the recent announcement that the Centre has resolved the long dispute between Goa and Karnataka over Mhadei and allowed the diversion of Mhadei to Karnataka to quench the thirst of farmers in the neighbouring State.
“I would like to bring to your urgent attention the fear and anxiety of the people of Goa that Mhadei river water would dry up soon in Goa on the background of the recent declaration by Centre that it has resolved the long dispute between Goa and Karnataka over Mhadei and allowed the diversion of Mhadei to Karnataka to quench the thirst of farmers,” he said.
He added: “Let us not forget that river Mhadei is the lifeline of Goa supplying water to 48 per cent of Goa's population and the entire agriculture of North Goa. Besides, wildlife, flora and fauna in Western Ghats are fully dependent on it.”
