Former chairperson and leader of Mhapshekarancho Ekvott, Sudhir Kandolkar on Friday said despite the Covid scare, people had come out in large numbers to exercise their franchise at the Mapusa Municipal Council elections, indicating that they wanted a change.
“Despite the pandemic, people came come out to vote. This clearly shows that people of Mapusa want a change and development,” he said.
He claimed that the need for change was palpable among voters as they were fed up with the same BJP-run panel ruling Mapusa and doing nothing for the town.
“For the last 22 years, there has been no development worth its salt in Mapusa. Just doing the roads and gutters is not development. There is no proper parking facility in the world famous Mapusa market. Locals have been deprived of adequate water supply. The sewerage treatment plant which is very essential for the town is still not completed,” he said.
He expressed confidence that people will bring a change and elect most of the candidates of Mhapshekarancho Ekvott. “Our candidates will win in at least 14 wards in Mapusa,” he said.
The ex-chairperson admitted that CM, ex-CM, local MLA and other BJP leaders campaigned in many wards for the ruling BJP panel and offered the bait of jobs to the voters.
“It could tilt the scales in their favour to certain extent. But overall, I feel the voters of Mapusa will not get swayed by such false promises,” he said.
Making light work of the challenge posed by his colleague and former chairperson Rupa Bhakta in his ward, Kandolkar said the voters of his ward will give a befitting reply to his detractors.
“There is no fight in my ward. I will win hands down. I have performed as a councillor for the last five years,” he said.
