BELAGAVI
The intense conflict between traders of Jai Kisan Private Market in Belagavi, which supplies wholesale vegetables to major markets in Goa, North Karnataka and South Maharashtra, and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) traders, was temporarily resolved through mediation by District In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi on Tuesday.
Jarkiholi has directed that all trade and transactions be conducted within the premises of the government-run APMC. This directive has been accepted by the traders from the Jai Kisan market as well.
As a result of this decision, the government APMC will be strengthened, and the district administration has been instructed to immediately allot vacant stalls for trading. This will also help traders from Goa to procure all vegetables, onions and potatoes from one place.
It may be recalled that the conflict had escalated due to differences between the Jai Kisan Private Market and the APMC traders. Both sides had staged intense agitations to press their demands, causing disturbance and traffic disruption in Belagavi city, and causing huge inconvenience to commuters from Goa and other neighbouring areas.
Finally, a meeting was held on Tuesday at the APMC market in Belagavi, where Minister Satish Jarkiholi instructed that all trade must take place within the APMC premises.
The traders from the private market expressed their willingness to operate within the APMC. They requested that arrangements be made to allow them to begin business activities in the vacant stalls within the APMC.
“We are ready to shift to APMC,” they assured Minister Jarkiholi.
Minister Jarkiholi appealed to all traders and farmers to cooperate in strengthening the government APMC and directed District Collector Mohammed Roshan to immediately allot stalls to the private market traders.
Present during the meeting were MLA Asif Sait, District Collector Mohammed Roshan, traders from the private market, and APMC traders.
