Mines Dept detains trucks without GPS

PANAJI: Launching a drive against erring truck operators, the Mines Department officials on Wednesday detained around 26 trucks across Goa for non-installation of Global Positioning System (GPS).
The truck operators were also not in possession of mandatory transit passes.
The drive was launched under the supervision of assistant geologist Sudhir Mandrekar and technical assistant Sham Sawant. Around 15 trucks were detained from Porvorim, 5 each from Bicholim and Amona, and one truck at Farmagudi.
Installation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been made mandatory for all trucks in the State to bring in transparency. All commercial vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, cars, trucks and buses also have to install GPS in line with the Centre and the Supreme Court’s direction.
The High Court at Bombay has also ordered the Mines Department to submit details of action taken against truck operators who not obeying the rules.
