Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function, Madkaikar said,
"The Central Government has come up with a scheme for setting up Alzheimer homes. In other states, NGOs come forward to take up these initiatives and such homes are set up."
However, lamenting that there are very less NGOs working for the welfare of the senior citizens, he said, "As there are very less NGOs working in the field of social welfare and hence we find it difficult to implement such schemes in Goa."
Appealing to NGOs to come forward to take up initiative to set up Alzheimer homes, he said, "If they come forward with a proposal, we can provide them with benefits under this scheme. We can identify the premises and give them the rent, staff, nurses or any other supporting staff. Additionally, we could also provide them grants for the construction of the home. This is fully a centrally funded scheme."
"We do have old age homes, but do not have a home entirely dedicated to Alzheimer patients. We can give grant to the institutions or assist them but we on our own cannot maintain it so we have made the appeal," he said.
