Shopping in SGPDA market becomes easy after fish vendors keep passages open

Perhaps for the first time in recent times, some of the passages of the SGPDA retail fish market were found wide open, free of encroachments.

Reason: Fish vendors led by President of the Fish Vendors Association Felix Gonsalves volunteered to sit on the platforms instead of selling fish in the passages, an initiative that drew instant applause from the consumers.
Other fish vendors, who were seen doing business in the passages, are all expected to follow suit in a day or two, as part of an exercise by the fish vendors to send a message to the powers that be that they mean business, hoping that the SGPDA and the TCP Minister, Vijai Sardesai would keep their promise to cracking a whip against illegal retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market. That the retail fish vendors took the first step ahead of the visit by the TCP Minister in the retail fish market indicates that they now expect the authorities to honour their promise and stop the retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market.
Says Felix Gonsalves: "We had promised the TCP Minister that the fish vendors will start selling fish from the platforms from October 1. The process has begun. We hope that the ground reality will soon change in the retail fish market". He, however, hastened to add that the TCP Minister and the PDA should
understand their problems and grievances and initiate necessary action.
The TCP Minister has promised the fish vendors that he would not only meet their long pending demand of cracking a whip against retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market, but other grievances, including amenities at the retail sale market. "I have only requested them to sit on the platforms in the fish market, promising modification of the platforms to suit the needs of the vendors. Let us bring Goemkarponn in the retail fish market. I want to do away with the eyesore in the retail fish market with amenities for the vendors," Vijai said.
