Minister makes job pitch for ‘visionary’ teacher’s daughter in Calangute p’yat

Lobo also suggested that all major roads in Calangute should be named after prominent persons from the village.

“You have to provide a job to one of his daughters whenever there is a vacancy in the panchayat. Only then will you be able to give real shradanjali to the teacher. They have never asked for a job but I am requesting ya’ll to do it,” Lobo said, in presence of Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins and other panchayat members.

The Ports Minister was addressing a function to name a stretch of Baga road after the noted school teacher Govind Shiolkar who was also the deputy sarpanch of Calangute in the 1980s.

A road stretch from Baga Deck to the crematorium in Baga has been named after the school teacher.

Continuing, Lobo said late Govind Shiolkar had a rare talent of teaching students by on-field examples so that the student could be able to easily grasp a lesson.

“When he taught about the hockey game he came up with a hockey stick in the class to show every move on the field. He used to guide the students by action,” he said, disclosing that Shiolkar also taught him from class 5 to 10.

He said late Shiolkar was a visionary teacher who had a concern for the common man.

Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins informed that the panchayat was ready to create a job for one of the children of the acclaimed teacher in the village.

“We have decided to first speak to the children and accordingly create a job for one of them. We have learnt that they are self-employed and running a business. We will decide on the job prospects depending on their response,” Martins said.

Earlier, a local, Eknath Nagvenkar requested the panchayat to take steps to name all roads in the village after popular personalities.

He said the road names should be used frequently so that they become popular and can be identified with the names.

Former sarpanch and present panchayat member Anthony Menezes also spoke.
