Tragedy struck a family from Sattari on Tuesday evening when a minor boy drowned in the Nanus river at Betkekarwada, while his brother is in a serious condition and another brother escaped with minor injuries.
According to reports, the incident took place around 4 pm when the three brothers, Irfan Shaikh (15), Asif (13) and Rehan (10) had gone for a swim in the river at Nanus.
A woman and her daughter, Ranjana, who had gone to the river to wash clothes, happened to notice the three brothers in distress and alerted two other family members, Saheel and Sagar.
They rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Asif and Rehan from the river, but Irfan got swept away in the water.
Rehan and Asif were shifted to the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC) and Rehan was later referred to the GMC hospital in Bambolim, where his condition is reported to be serious. Asif was later sent home after first aid.
The Valpoi Fire Services were notified and firefighters later retrieved the body of Irfan from the water. A Valpoi police team also went to the site and conducted the panchanama. The body has been sent for an autopsy at the GMC hospital.
Meanwhile, members of the Laad family, who rescued two brothers from the Nanus river, have been widely praised for their quick action in saving the lives of two brothers.
