Mixed response to pedestrian market

The Mapusa Merchants’ Association has given a thumbs up to the suggestion of pedestrianising the Mapusa market, while some said the local civic body has to first make proper provision for parking and then try to implement new ideas.

MAPUSA:
“If a motorist wants to visit the Mapusa market, where will he park his vehicle? Finding a parking place is a big problem in Mapusa. The council should first make provision for parking and then apply their minds on other ideas,” said Surendra Sirsat, former Speaker and a resident.
He said the idea to pedestrianise the market, though brilliant, can be implemented only when ample parking space is available.
Welcoming the pedestrianising concept, Mapusa Merchants’ Association, president, Ashish Shirodkar said, “Pedestrianizing of the market is the need of the hour. All right thinking people should welcome the idea, as it will not only be in the interest of the consumers but also the shop owners and other businesses.”
A section of the people however believes that Mapusa market is already a pedestrianized market
“There’s already a decision by the council not to allow two-wheelers and four-wheelers inside the market. So the concept of pedestrianizing already exists in Mapusa market,” said Advocate Mahesh Rane.
“Who has failed in implementing the decision is the Mapusa Municipal Council,” he added.
He said sign boards were fixed banning entry of two and four-wheelers inside the market, and said those boards have disappeared.
