MARGAO
Even as the Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has managed to stop Margao Civic Chief Damu Shirodkar from tendering his resignation from the post, the seven-time MLA is facing an acid test to his leadership, to pull the right strings in the government to withdraw the letter cancelling the recruitment process in the Margao Civic body.
For, despite making an announcement during the weekend that Urban development Minister Vishwajit Rane will withdraw the letter cancelling the recruitment process in the MMC, the ground reality has remained unchanged on Monday.
None other than the Margao MLA knows for sure that the fate of the BJP-ruled Margao Municipal Council may hang in balance if he does not honour the promise made to the two ruling Councillors to provide LDC jobs to their siblings.
Members of the ruling group say the BJP could form the Council on October 2, 2022, after 17 long years, only after Kamat handed out promises to the Councillors to rally behind him and the party in forming the Council. In fact, a ruling Councillor pointed out that Kamat had promised to give jobs to the siblings of the two Councilors in exchange of support for the BJP in the Municipal polls.
Sources informed that the Margao MLA indeed spoke to the Urban Development Minister on the issue, impressing upon the need to withdraw the letter issued by the Director, Urban development, to pave way for the completion of the recruitment process, but in vain.
