Mormugao MLA and Goa Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Limited (SIDCGL) chairman Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday launched sewer works at Headland Sada, in the presence of councillor Shraddha Amonkar and local residents.
Amonkar said this was the first project he was inaugurating in his constituency as SIDCGL chairman. The Rs 3 crore works will be carried out at 10 locations at the same time, with the contractor directed to complete them within four months.
He said surveys and inspections had already been completed in Jetty, Baina and nearby areas, with more works expected to begin in the next three months. He added that the main sewage pipelines from Sada to Desterro and then to the Baina sewage plant are 35 to 40 years old and too small, leading to frequent choking and overflow during rains.
A major project costing about Rs 80 crore has been proposed to replace the entire line, and Amonkar said it would be completed before the upcoming elections to provide relief to residents.
He also said the SIDCGL plans to upgrade the Baina sewage treatment plant and seven sewage pumping stations, and warned that action would be taken against illegal sewage pipelines discharging into the sea.
