Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Friday submitted a memorandum of demands by traditional fishermen to Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and others.
The demands include regularisation of houses, setting up of a ramp, setting up of loading points, shed for repairs of nets and issue of open sewage discharge in the sea.
Amonkar also requested Halarnkar to address fishermen's issues as a top priority.
"Traditional fishermen have been constantly living in fear as they have been receiving eviction notices on many occasions from different departments and they have requested the fisheries department to consider their long pending demand of regulators of houses.”
“We have around 200 canoes in Mormugao constituency which face parking issues during the monsoons and they are forced to look out for other distant areas like Velsao, Hollant, etc to dock their canoes. The canoe owners have requested the fisheries department to construct a breakwater along with a ramp to help dock the canoes," said Amonkar.
The Mormugao MLA also said the traditional fishermen need a loading point cum procurement centre along the beach at Baina.
“These fishermen usually survive on the sale of fresh catch of fish on a daily basis. The fishermen have requested the fisheries department to set up a loading point so that the fresh catch of fish can be unloaded in quick time.”
“They also want a procurement centre where they can sell their fish to prospective buyers as traditional fishermen don't always get proper rates for their catch when they approach other markets in the Taluka,” said Amonkar.
The MLA said the fishermen had demanded a shed to repair nets and canoes as and when required.
"The fishermen also pointed out that the nearby sewerage department is usually discharging sewerage in the open, which flows into the sea and has affected marine life. They have requested the fisheries department to take up this issue with the department concerned and resolve the issue on priority," said Amonkar.
