VASCO
Cortalim MLA Antonio Vas on Friday conducted a joint inspection at the quarry located near the Cansaulim-Cuelim road and reviewed the remedial measures taken to enhance safety at the site.
The inspection, which was conducted in response to the tragic drowning of a student last year, was attended by officials from various government departments
During the inspection, it was observed that significant steps have been taken to prevent future accidents. A portion of the quarry has been landfilled, and effective drainage systems have been established to ensure that water does not accumulate, thus mitigating the risk of drowning.
MLA Vas highlighted the importance of these measures, stating, “The safety of our community is our utmost priority. The tragic loss of a young life last year underscored the need for immediate action. We have implemented these measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.”
In addition to the landfilling and drainage improvements, the access to the quarry from the main road has been barricaded to prevent unauthorised entry. Warning signs have also been placed around the area to alert the public of potential dangers.
The joint inspection team included representatives from the local administration, public works department, police, and safety regulators.
Officials expressed confidence that these comprehensive safety measures would significantly reduce the risk of future incidents.
The inspection concluded with a commitment to continuous monitoring and further enhancements if needed.
MLA Vas assured the community of ongoing efforts to maintain a safe environment, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and preventive actions.
Among those present for the site inspection at the Cansaulim quarry included Anthony Lucas (AE, WRD), Sandesh Kaulekar (JE, WRD), Tanvi Harmalkar (JE, PWD-Bldgs), Sunny Parsekar (Draftsman, PWD), Kalpita Gawas (Talathi, Cansaulim), Sahil Naik (Field Surveyor, Mamlatdar office), Melson Colaco (PI, Verna PS), Savio Pereira (Sarpanch, Cansaulim) and Marvila (Dy Sarpanch, Cansaulim).
