Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday emphasised the need for greater recognition of Shivaji Maharaj in school syllabus
He was speaking after performing an abhishek of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a grand function organised by the Murgao Hindu Samaj at Chicalim, home to Goa’s tallest statue of the great Maratha king.
Addressing the gathering, Salkar underscored the importance of instilling the values of Shivaji Maharaj in today’s
youth.
Highlighting how the warrior king’s leadership, bravery, and administrative vision continue to serve as an inspiration, Salkar said: “Shivaji Maharaj was not just a warrior but a farsighted ruler who established swarajya and built a powerful navy, making him the founder of the Indian Navy.”
The Vasco MLA urged the younger generation to learn more about India’s historical icons, particularly Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, whose sacrifices and contributions shaped the nation.
He expressed concern over the inadequate representation of these legendary warriors in school textbooks, criticising how Indian heroes are often overlooked while the Mughals are glorified.
“Our history books fail to do justice to the true legacy of our great warriors. While invaders are given prominence, the sacrifices and achievements of leaders like Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj remain neglected. It is high time we correct this and ensure our students learn about their real heroes,” Salkar remarked.
He assured that he would raise this issue in the upcoming assembly session, advocating for the inclusion of detailed historical accounts of these leaders in the school curriculum.
“The younger generation must know about the sacrifices that built this nation. I will ensure that our educational system gives due recognition to these great figures,” he affirmed.
