Arolkar bore all medical and travel expenses
PERNEM
After playing a key role in the successful heart transplant of firefighter Umesh Varak from Kasarvarne in Pernem, Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar visited a hospital in Chennai and arranged for Varak’s discharge on Saturday.
Arolkar bore all medical and travel expenses related to Varak’s heart surgery and treatment.
He also visited Varak at hospitals in Mumbai and Chennai to enquire about his health during different stages of the treatment.
Soon after the Assembly session ended late on Friday night, Arolkar flew to Chennai, met the medical specialists and ensured that all procedures were completed for Varak’s discharge.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Arolkar said arranging a heart for the transplant was extremely difficult. He said donating a heart involves great sacrifice. A young man who died in an accident became the donor, and a special helicopter was arranged to transport the heart from Madurai to Chennai.
Doctors informed him that since Varak received the heart of a young donor, his recovery would be faster.
Arolkar said heart specialist Dr Suresh Rao successfully carried out the transplant and thanked the hospital staff for giving Varak a new lease of life.
Umesh Varak expressed gratitude to the MLA for supporting him throughout the treatment.
He said Arolkar not only bore all expenses but also regularly called to check on his health and advised him to take care.
