Conceding that Curtorim is facing garbage and sewage disposal issues, independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Wednesday said he has accepted the challenge to resolve the two issues within the next two years.

Addressing the media along with Curtorim Sarpanch Alcino D’Silva and others, the Curtorim MLA said motorcycle-borne personnel will be deployed in the village to rein in unscrupulous persons dumping waste along the village roadsides. He further said that both garbage and sewage disposal will be accorded top priority, exuding confidence in tackling these issues head-on.

Without naming any person or group, the MLA, who is a coalition partner of the BJP-led government, said some people are trying to do politics on the issues of garbage and sewage. “My answer to these people is that let us all join hands to resolve these issues. There’s still time to resort to politics. Let us do politics at the next elections”, he said.

Saying the Curtorim Panchayat has identified the spots where waste is being dumped along the roadsides, Reginaldo warned that those disposing of the waste in open spaces will be fined Rs 5,000. “There are no two ways about garbage. We will come down heavily against anyone disposing of garbage in public places,” he warned.

Sarpanch Alcino said the Panchayat has offered full support to the MLA to resolve the garbage issues. "The Panchayat is collecting dry waste from the wards. We fail to understand how people still throw their waste along the roadsides,” the Sarpanch said.
