Kick-starting a campaign “Save Water, Save Life”, the Margao Municipal Council has issued an appeal to all Madgavkars to connect their households and commercial establishments to the underground sewerage line to contain nuisance and also help in proper usage of the untreated water.

The appeal signed by Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai, her deputy Tito Cardozo and Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes has made an impassioned plea to the general public and in particular the hoteliers and housing societies to connect their waste water to the sewerage treatment plant so that all untreated water can be put to better usage.

“Margao Town is covered by an integrated sewerage system, which is thereafter being duly treated at the sewerage treatment plant. Many of the shops, establishments, residential bungalows, apartments have not obtained the sewerage connections and as a result of the same, untreated water gets spilled over from the soakpits/septic tanks and gushes through storm water drains,” the appeal states.

The trio further stated in the appeal that the untreated sewage water not only causes environmental damage, but is also causing nuisance in the town for the general public. The very same sewage water upon being treated can be used for various purposes such as gardening, construction work, flushing etc.

“There has already been fights/wars on water as we have seen for Mhadei, but when God Almighty has blessed us abundantly, it is our bounded duty to preserve and conserve water for the future generations,” the appeal stated, while making a humble appeal to all the people to join hands in connecting their households and establishments to the sewerage

network.

The appeal assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that though the Goa Sewage Corporation and JICA has laid an elaborate underground network in the city, not many households and commercial establishments have availed of the sewerage connections till date.

The end result being that even though Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had last year commissioned two state-of-the-art sewerage treatment plants at Sirvodem, both the units are working below their normal capacity for want of sewage flowing from the households and commercial establishments.

Sources said that the sewerage connections are available all along the Malbhat, Pajifond and Aquem areas of the city, the number of connections sought by the households and commercial establishments are not up to the expectations.
