MARGAO
The over century-old Portuguese era Margao Municipal Council building will once again don the brick red colour “ more than half a decade after then City Fathers had in their wisdom opted for the yellow and white paint on the imposing civic building.
That’s not all. If the plans mooted by the consultant UDAI roped in by the government is any indication, the entire Municipal square will undergo a facelift with LED lighting which will create an image of the national tricolor on the Municipal building.
After a presentation by Architect Pritesh Bafna, UDA, TCP Minister said it has been decided to revert back to the old brick red colour and restore the old glory.
“The change in the colour of the Municipal building was long overdue. The MMC building always sported a brick red colour since the Portuguese era. We will restore the old colour as well as the old glory of the building,” he said.
He said the Municipal building as well as the Municipal square will be upgraded in tune with the heritage status the over century old building enjoys. “The consultant has planned LED lighting of the building which in a way will reflect the importance of the Municipal building,” the TCP Minister added.
The consultant has been told to give final touches to the MMC building renovation plan before it is brought back to the stakeholders, including the City Fathers, for approval.
The MMC, in its budget estimates for the current financial year, had earmarked an amount of Rs 50 lakh for the upgradation and maintenance of the Municipal building, including painting and general repairs.
The last time the Margao municipal building had undergone major renovation work was in the early 2000 when the building had commemorated hundred years of its existence.
