MARGAO
Soon after returning from Rajkot-Gujarat where he had gone to attend a meeting of the Swimming Association of India, Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said the BJP-backed group would shortlist the candidate for the Margao Municipal Chairperson’s post after a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and State BJP President Sadanand Tanavade.
“We are ready for the election scheduled on October 12. We have the forms with us. We will finalise our candidate for the vacant post after a meeting with the Chief Minister and the State BJP President,” Kamat said, giving indications that the BJP will collectively decide on the candidate for the crucial election.
Last time, the BJP-backed group had fielded Kamat’s right-hand man councillor Damu Shirodkar for the post before he suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Goa Forward-backed Ganashyam Shirodkar, largely due to cross-voting by the five BJP councillors.
Questions are being raised in political circles about whether Kamat would bat for his Man Friday, or whether the party leadership opts for a consensus candidate to ensure smooth sailing in the October 12 election.
